CRITICISM OF U.S. OFFICIALS
FURTHER STATEMENT BY MR MAAS (Rec. 1 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Feb. 23. Referring to his statement that New Zealand had built 105 airfields and charged them to the United States. Mr Nelson J. Maas told the Associated Press that the New Zealanders did so because they wanted the fields for themselves after the war. Furthermore. American leiidlease officials failed to specify how many fields they wanted, and were careless in handling arrangements for the payment of lend-lease.
‘T visited New Zealand and Australia recently, and found the New Zealanders as enthusiastic and cooperative in the war effort as any of the Allies anywhere. What I said at lend-lease hearings was not in criticism of New Zealanders, but of the manner in which American officials handled these matters, I accused them of being indefinite, loose, and unsatisfactory in their arrangements. 1 have a tremendously good feeling for the New Zealanders, and I want to make it clear that I am not criticising them.”
