PROTECTION WORK ON ASHLEY RIVER
GOVERNMENT’S OFFER ACCEPTED Alter considerable discussion the Ashley River Trust decided, at a meetir . held in Rangiora last night, to accept an offer made by the Government to enable protection and repair work to be carried out on the Ashley River near Waikuku. Letters were received from various sources pointing out the seriousness of the position and urging immediate action to deal with it. ' c chairman, Mr F. D. Grant (Public Works Engineer) said the position was such that he wanted a decision before he left the meeting. He felt that tin work could not be started quickly enough. "Cabinet has approved c.f an expenditure of £1750 <£4 for £3)," he said, "on condition that the trust contributes £750 in the following instalments:— £250 on March 31, 1943. and £SOO on F ptember 30, 1943. I am advised that authority for £1750 is being issued to ra.>, and that I may proceed with the work as soon as I am in receipt of a certified resolution from the trust agreeing to make payment on the dates due.”
The trust carried a motion accepting the offer.
Broken Rail in Tunnel.—Rail traffic on the Rewanui line was disorganised on Thursday because of a broken rail which was discovered In a tunnel about two miles from Rewanui. Passengers on the afternoon train from Greymo.nh. and in the miners' train from Rewanui, were transhipped at the spot. Repairs were made and the line was again clear on Thursday night.
