FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR SOLDIERS
Sir, —Perhaps one of the Ministers of the Crown at present in Christchurch may be able to answer this question. Did the Government, when it increased the pay and allowances to members of the armed forces last December, intend that such increases should be deducted from any assistance being received from the Soldiers’ Financial Aid Board, or was the increase granted to meet the increased cost of the living? Although my commitments are the same as when I entered the Army, the Soldiers’ Financial Aid Board has, in view of the increased pay and allowances, decided to discontinue the grant which it previously considered necessary. I presume many others have been treated similarly, as my notification came in the form of a circular.—Yours, etc., WORSE OFF. February 2, 1943. [This letter was referred to the Minister of Defence, but no reply has been received.—Ed., “The Press.’’]
