TREE DESTROYED BY LIGHTNING.—The photograph shows the upper part of an American fir tree on the papanui Domain after it had been struck by lightning yesterday. The split was from the top of the tree to about 20 feet from the ground. One part of the top was snapped off and pieces of Umber were thrown a distance of 65 yards. The report which accompanied the lightning could be heard in all parts of the Papanui district. A peculiar feature of the strike was lhai every piece of timber was thrown in a southerly direction.
