ELECTION THIS YEAR
MOTION BEFORE HOUSE TO DAY
ANIMATED DEBATE EXPECTED
(From OUr Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, February 24. “That it is the opinion of the House that, in view of the continued improvement in the war situation, a General Election should be held during the present year to enable the people, in accordance with their democratic rights, to elect their representatives in Parliament, and it is resolved, therefore, that pursuant to the proviso to Section 2 of the Prolongation of Parliament Act, 1942, the House of Representatives shall, unless the General Assembly is sooner dissolved, continue until November 1, 1943, and no longer.” Notice of his intention to move this motion at the next sitting day (Thursday) was given by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) after the House of Representatives had assembled to-day for the opening of the fifth session of the present Parliament the life of which was extended in 1941 and again last year. It is expected that the subject will lead to an animated debate.
