NEW HOSPITAL BUILDINGS
ACQUISITION OF SITE APPROVED The Minister of Health (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) informed the North Canterbury Hospital Board by telephone from Wellington yesterday that approval • hrd been, given for the ac-. quisition of the Presbyterian Manse site in Hagley avenue and Tuam street for additional buildings for the Christchurch Public Hospital. The chairman (Mr L. B. Evans) reported that proposals for a reorganisation scheme for the hospital had now advanced, and he would this week discuss them with the Direc-tor-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, who was now visiting Christchurch. The Presbyterian manse site, of more than two acres, was originally acquired by the Government as a site for St. Helens Hospital. Another site has since been acquired in Durham street for that purpose. It was hoped, said the chairman, to provide additional accommodation for out-patients under this scheme, also to erect a new laundry. It would now be possible, Mr Evans added, to proceed with the preparation of plans. When they wqre available from the board’s architect, they would be brought before .members.
“After many months of negotiation,” said the chairman, “we can now say that we can go ahead with our proposals.”
