WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Mount Pleasant.—Mrs Turland presided at the monthly meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute, held at the home of Mrs MacDonnell. An instructive talk on home nursing was given by Mrs Morten. Mrs Berry was welcomed as a new member. A presentation was made to Mrs Willcocks. retiring treasurer, and Mrs Roche was appointed to succeed her. Hostesses were Mesdames Willcocks, Edgar. Davis, and Harbutt. Canterbury Club.—The Canterbury Women’s Institute Club held its monthly meeting in Harmony Hall. Mrs Kenny, the president, was welcomed back after an illness. Mesdames Davis and Candy each reported on having paid visits to country members and club members in hospitals. The roll call, “The nicest place for a holiday,” was well responded to Members were reminded of the group picnic. The speaker was Miss S. McKee, who spoke on the bottling and drying of fruits and vegetables. Knitted garments were handed in and the sales table did good business. Competitions resulted as follows; Best bloom: Mrs Weaver 1, Mrs Candy 2, Mrs Hewitt 3, Raspberry jam: Mrs Keen and Mrs Candy (equal) 1, Mrs James 3. Burnham.—Mrs J. A. Scott presided over a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the institute. Several knitted comforts for men of the armed forces wore handed in. and also a quilt made by members for Dr. Barnardo's Home. During the afternoon, the sewing circle made face-cloths to be sent to a hospital Interesting letters were read from Siste; Scott, a former member who is serving overseas. Competitions were for a slice of Christmas cake and large and smal' blooms. Hostesses were Mrs Moreton and Miss R. Marshall.
