RECONSTRUCTION IN AUSTRALIA

DIRECTOR-GENERAL APPOINTED

(Rec. 7,30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 16. Australia has appointed a DirectorGeneral of Post-war Reconstruction. He is Dr. H. C. Coombs, at present Director of Rationing. He is 37 years of age.

Dr. Coombs is one of Australia’s outstanding public servants. He went from schoolteaching in Western Australia to the London University where he became a Doctor of Philosophy. Returning to Australia, he was appointed economic consultant to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, from which he was lent to the Federal Treasury Since becoming the Director of Rationing. he has been appointed to the Commonwealth Bank Board. In his new post. Dr. Coombs will work under the Minister of Post-war Reconstruction, at present the Federal Treasurer (Mr J. B. Chifley).
