RUBBER

Sir,—ln these days when a wail goes forth for rubber it may be of interest to know that the rubber plant (Fiscus elastica) flourished in private gardens in Auckland, Whangarci, and Kawau Island 40 years ago. In September, 1907, H. J. Matthews, the then head of State Forestry, suggested that the plant be established commercially at Hokianga. It appears that the New Zealand authorities never learnt the adage about never missing the water till the well runs dry.—Yours, etc., W. A. TAYLOR. January 15, 1943.
