New Zealanders Popular
The following is an extract from a letter received by Mr W. H. Down, of Dyers Pass road, Cashmere, from his son, Cadet Irvine W. Down, who spent Christmas in Melbourne, on leave from the Officers' Training School, Flinders Naval Depot, where he is studying for a commission after serving for throe year? on H M.N.Z.S. Loander.—-"On the evening before New Year's eve I attended a reception to members of the Services visiting Melbourne for the holidays. When the chairman called on the representatives from the various states and countries to announce their name and unit, they all received a good hearing, especially the 'Yanks’; but the heartiest reception of all was given to the sole New Zealand representative. When I was called on and stated that I was a 'Kiwi.' which is what they call the New Zealanders over here, the applause was almost deafening and I was quite embarrassed."
