SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP Track Records at Wingatui Track and atmospheric conditions were very favourable for fast travelling at Wingatui last Saturday, two track records being broken and another equalled. In the Owhiro Hurdles, Strip recorded 2mln 40 2-ssec for a mile and a half, the previous record, 2min 40 3-ssec, being established by Superex In 1941. Spanish Lad covered a mile, two furlongs and a half in 2min 11 l-ssec, breaking the previous record, 2mln 12sec, made by Swordstick in 1939. Royal Lancer’s time for a mile, Imin 38 2-ssec, in the Hazlett Gold Cup, equalled the previous record held jointly by Silver Ring, Deucalion, and Silver Sight. Supercharged ran his five furlongs in the Hopeful Handicap In Imin 1 2-ssec, or a fifth of a second outside the record held by Gold Flight. Faulty Jumping Strip won the Owhiro Hurdles at Wingatui in good style, but his task would have been much more difficult if Colonel Rouge had not lost valuable ground at the last fence, his rider being thrown on to the horse’s neck, and he took some time to get back again. Then Colonel Rouge was only a length behind Strip at the post. Another in Taxpayer lost a good chance by a faulty jump two fences from home, and he also lost a good position. Taxpayer has been a long time making good as a hurdler. He executes some dashing efforts, but Invariably puts in a wrong one. He has plenty of pace as hurdlers go, and should develop into a useful horse during the winter. Sent Back Mldgard was making a likely forward move in the same race when he tried to get up on the inside of Taxpayer rounding the home turn, but the opening was not there, and he suffered such a severe check that he drifted out of the contest. I| as pftcc Silver Mask, by Theio, in the same ownership as Prince Shad, has a marked turn of speed, but in all of his recent races, he has weakened as soon as the serious stages have been reached. He is a three-year-old grey colt, and may develop stamina with more age. Well Bred Girl Friend, who showed some prominence in the maiden event at Wingatui. is a three-year-old filly by Man’s Pal from the one-time successful sprinter Gold Boa, and like the dam, is raced by her breeder, Mr J. P. Herlihy, for whom she is trained by D. P. Wilson. Likely Improver Gallopade was taken round the southern circuit bv S. Barr for his owner. Mr A. Syme. and although he did not earn anv money, his form was encouraging, and he should gain valuable experience from the trip. He Is a five-year-old gelding by Myosotis from Idolize, by Arrowsmith from Precious by Sutala. Idolize was bred by the late Mr J. McCormack, who had the pleasure of winning two races with her at a Banks Peninsula meeting held at Riccarton. Gallopa •. who has not been in commission v long is built on much more solid lines than his dam. and a high opinion is held of him. Useful Pair , Shikari was expected to race well at Wingatui on Saturday, but after being last away he was always struggling at or near the rear, and did not look likely to get up at any stage. Egyptian Rose, In the same race, was in a handy position turning for home, but did not run on as expected. Egyptian Rose is to race at Trentham, and will contest the Telegraph Handicap next Saturday. On her last visit north, in October, 1941, she won two hack races over six and seven furlongs respectively, Ind although she has not done much this season, she has thrived on recent racing, and may again show up. Her stablemate, Dash o Dublin, was well supported in his engagement on Saturday, but went down very scratchlly in his preliminary, and although no ran a good race, tbe hard ground was against him. He is in the seven lut* long hack event on Saturday, and should the track be at all yielding, be will have to be kept in view, A Southland Prospect Sal. who will accompany Royal Lancer to Trentham, was sent out first choice In the concluding event at Wingatui, but although filling third P‘ a ,£ e ' she had no chance of getting near the winner, Prince Shad, who can be classed as one of the most promising stayers in Hie South Island. Sal is nevertheless capable of a better showing than she made, and will carry strong Southland support in her engagements.
