The Minister of Agriculture and Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) arrived in Christchurch last evening and will return to Wellington to-night. He is accompanied by Mr R. B. Tennent (superintendent of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture) and Mr M. J. Scott (organiser for Primary Production). The Hon. W. E. Barnard. Speaker of the House of Representatives arrived in Christchurch from Westport yesterday. He will visit Waimale on Friday and will speak on "The War Situation.’’ Word has been received by his parents, Mr and Mrs M. H. Godby, that Flight Lieutenant P. R. Godby, of the Royal Air Force, has been promoted to Squadron Leader. His brother, Pilot Officer I. M. Godby, recently arrived in England. Squadron Leader Godby was formerly on the reporting staff of "The Press.” He loft for England before the war and joined the Royal Air Force.
Cabled advice has been received that Mr Philip J. Lawrence, youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. N. Lawrence, of Cashmere Hills, has received his commission as sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy, He left New Zealand in December, 1941, and in addition to periods of training spent on H.M.S. Ganges and H.M.S. King Alfred, served for several months on a sloop. Mr G. H. McLean, district traffic manager of railways at Christchurch, left for Dunedin on departmental business yesterday.
Regret at the deaths of Messrs G. A. Hamilton, G. H. Bruorton, W. L. Stevenson, A. J. Glackin, and G. W. Hall, and sympathy with relatives, were expressed by the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services' Association last evening.
