ARMY EDUCATION SERVICE

CAREERS OF YOUNG PEOPLE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 11

“Parents may now be assured that the careers of their sons and daughters are safeguarded to some extent, provided these young people are prepared to seize the opportunities offered,” the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) said to-day, when explaining some details of the Army education and welfare service scheme. With the exception of discussion on some aspects of current or international affairs which would be part of the weekly training programme, the scheme would be entirely voluntary, the Minister said. He referred to opportunities for study and the development of hobbies which were outlined earlier in the week by the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason), and said that particular thought had been given to younger men, especially those under 21 years of age. Individual study courses and classes both within the unit and at technical and agricultural colleges and industrial workshops would be organised for educational training and the completion of apprenticeships. Well-lit huts would be provided in camps, for individual study, but homes in the vicinity of the camps could help bv making rooms available for one or two men to work in pleasing surroundings. Entertainment of the troops had not been overlooked, and plans included bringing good entertainment to camps.
