WATERSIDERS IN HOME GUARD

APPEAL BOARD’S DECISIONS

“These appeals by waterside workers against Home Guard service have caused the board a good deal of concern, said Mr E. A. Lee, chairman of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board, in announcing some reserved decisions yesterday. “It appeared that many of the men work very long hours at certain periods, and the board was anxious that no hardship should be imposed on them by obligation to attend parades. On me other hand, it did appear that at times parades could be attended without any hardship, and the possibility of such a large body ot men receiving training was of great 'importance.” After a conference with the authorities concerned, the board had been told that arrangements were complete to ensure training without hardship, Mr Lee said, and in view of this, the appeals would be dismissed, but this did not prejudice the appeals of watersiders who mifint plead hardship from other causes than their work.
