HEAVY RAINFALL

WAIMAKARIRI RIVER RISES The heavy rainfall of the last two days caused a big rise in the Waimakariri river, and at noon yesterday it was eight feet above normal at the Gorge and had remained at that level for two hours. The peak of the flood at the Main North road bridge was at 10 a.m., when the water was seven feet above normal level.

There was a gradual drop from noon yesterday, and by 7 p.m. the water had subsided three feet.

More than eight inches of rain has fallen at Arthur’s Pass during the last two days, and though there is a big volume of water in the Waimakariri, there has been, up to the present, no danger of serious flooding.

HEAVY RAINFALL AT KAIKOURA

The second heavy fall of rain within a week began at Kaikoura on Thursday evening and continued throughout yesterday. For the 24 hours ended 7.30 p.m. yesterday, the rainfall was 2.03 inches, making a total fall of nearly four inches, with the previous heavy fall on Sunday and Monday. Rain was still falling heavily late last evening, but the rivers in the district, although discoloured, have only risen a few inches and dangers of flooding were not then apparent
