Mrs A. J. Benzie, organiser of the Welcome Club bridge party held on October 28, has handed to the club a further sum of £6 Is 6d, bringing the total net receipts of the party to £B4 ss.

Handkerchiefs may be purchased as from yesterday without coupons. Since the introduction of clothes rationing, one handkerchief has required a quarter-coupon. Mrs F. S. Hurd-Wood, better known as Mrs Marion Dudley Cran, F.R.S.A., author, journalist, and organiser, died ir a nursing home at Benenden, Kent. She was the founder of the original Garden Club in Mayfair, London. For her services to literature she was awarded a Civil List pension in 1939. 1 "Coggers,” Mrs Cran’s home in Kent, was built in 1320 and rescued from decay by the author in 1921, 600 years later.

In the twenty-first annual report of the Parents’ National Educational Union, presented at the annual meeting last evening, regret was expressed at the death of Dr. John Guthrie, a foundation member of the union, a vice-president for miany years and an interesting lecturer who had addressed several meetings of the union. A vote of sympathy with Mrs W. R. Bullen in the death of her husband was passed at the meeting. Miss Ria advisor on kindergarten and infant training to the Department of Education, who has been conducting a special course for teachers at Kaikoura, will leave Christchurch this morning for Invercargill,

Mrs Norton Francis was last, evening re-elected president of the Christchurch branch of the Parents’ National Educational Union for the twenty-second year in succession. A vote of thanlis was accorded her for the great amount of work she has done for the branch, and especially for her continued interest and her hospitality during the last year. Gratitude was also expressed to Miss Jocelyn Francis for her helpful cooperation. At the last meeting of the executive of the Canterbury (N.Z.) Travel Club it was decided to give £lO from the club's patriotic fund to the appeal to be held next'week for the Maori Battalion. The Mayoress (Miss E. Couzins) has been advised that the pupils of the Maori college. Te Waipounamu, will help in providing the programme for the Maori concert to be held in Cathedral square on the day of the appeal. The Christchurch branch of the Lady Galway Guild would be grateful to its helpers if they would bring or send to the depot in Manchester street, as soon as possible, all finished garments that they have been making in their own homes. The guild is preparing to pack cases of clothing for shipment overseas and the officials wish to have all the goods ready for dispatch before December 18. when the depot will close for eight weeks.

Appreciative reference was made at last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch Technical College Board of Governors to the services of Miss M. Wilkie, who has retired from the pest of principal of the Girls’ Training Hostel, Miss Wilkie, who had held the position for 23 years, will be succeeded by Miss Ivy Hiron.

With Mrs George Gould’s kind permission the Victoria League of Canterbury will hold a garden fete at Avonbank on Saturday, February 13. 1943, —6

At a meeting held at the Welcome Club yesterday afternoon, final arrangements were made for Paddy’s Christmas market to be held this month, in aid of the club’s funds. Mrs H. Wyatt presided, and announced that different women’s organisations would be in charge of stalls for the Sale of cakes. produce, jams, pickles, cooked food, and surprise packets, and individual members would help in supplying stock for the stalls. —1
