WARNING TO PRISONER
“ INTOLERABLE NUISANCE TO COMMUNITY ”
Harold John Carr, 39. a labourer, who had pleaded guilty to five charges of housebreaking and two of burglary in Christchurch, was warned by Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court yesterday, that if he ever again appeared before the Court there was a strong probability that he would be declared an habitual criminal. The prisoner was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour. "I am concerned about your record,” said his Honour. "It goes back for nine years. Some of these crimes of dishonesty are serious. You have now become an intolerable nuisance to the community. and it is my duty to treat you as such."
The prisoner had prepared a written statement for consideration by the Court in which he attributed his troubles to drink and ill-health. "This may or may not be true," commented the Judge, "but what I am concerned about is your record.” His Honour instructed the Registrar to record his warning to Carr.
