WOOL APPRAISAL AT AUCKLAND

SHORTAGE OF LABOUR CAUSES DIFFICULTIES

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. War conditions are hampering the third appraisal of this season’s Auckland wool clip, which is due to begin in a week.

Shearing troubles have been overcome and the problem of transport has been solved. Last year, at the corresponding appraisal, more than 13,000 bales were dealt with. At present it is probable that a similar quantity is piled up in various stores but, according to Mr F. G. Binney, chairman of the Auckland Woolbrokers’ Association, brokers are at their wits’ end in trying to get as much wool as possible ready for appraisal. “The position in regard to handling wool in the stores is desperate,” he said. “Last year at this time we had over 300 men for this work. This time we started with 75 and after an appeal to the National Service Department, we got the number increased to 130. It is certain that q substantial quantity of wool which was got into the store in spite of many obstacles, cannot be got ready for the appraisers.”
