FOR DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES

CSO RAISED YESTERDAY

At her home, “Chippenham,” Brown's road, yesterday, Lady Acland held an afternoon party and sale of work in aid of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes in England. In arranging the sale, Lady Acland had planned to place the stalls on the lawn so that visitors might enjoy the beauty of the gardens, but rain, which set in steadily about noon, made this impossible. So the goods were displayed indoors, where a splendid collection of toys, babies’ clothes, Christmas gifts, and other articles attracted eager buyers. Amongst the many friends who had helped in supplying the stock were Mrs Dass,. the Misses Srriythe, Mrs F. H. Fish, Mrs A. I. Rattray, and Mr Fleming. The proceeds of the sale reached nearly £SO.

CHOLMONDELEY HOME

Mr E, A. Adams presided at the committee meeting of the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home, and reported that an electric stove and a new switchboard had been installed in the home.

•It was reported that the home was closed at present, as members of the staff were having annual leave, and that the children would be back in the home for Christmas. The home would be lent to the Sunlight League for the health camp during the month of January, said the report. To carry on the work of the Cholmondeley Home a further appeal for funds would be made. In the matron’s report, appreciation was expressed to Messrs D. H. Brown and Son for gifts, and to other friends for gifts of clothing, books, magazines, and cakes.

DISPLAY OF WORK

Parents and friends of pupils of the Avonside Girls’ High School saw an exhibition of work and display of honours drill and dancing at the school yesterday afternoon. Miss R. P. Karsten, the principal, received her guests. Owing to the rain the display of dancing and dr ill was given in the assembly hall, instead of on the lawn. Dutch, Scandinavian, and English country dances were given by the senior, intermediate, and junior pupils in that order. In the classrooms the specimens shown of cooking, sewing, dressmaking. and fine arts done by the pupils during the year reached a high standard of quality. Vegetables grown by the girls in the school kitchen garden were also on show.
