HOME GUARD PARADE

Sir—The opposition of ‘‘The Press to the Home Guard parade which is to be held next Sunday appears to me to be misguided and ungenerous. The argument that “smart movements that the men are encouraged to perform on ceremonial parades are me antithesis of their movements in actual battle,” is not altogether the most convincing or the most profound The Press” could have found. The truth is that shortly some of the men who have worked for the last two year to organise the Home Guard are to be relieved of their positions, which will be taken over by the Army. These men, along r with the men in the ranks, have worked together in excellent fighting force the Home Guard is to-day. They worked through adversity and ridicule, undaunted by lack of Government and public sympathy. Sunday will be the last occasion on which the District Director will have the opportunity of seeing all the Christchurch Guardsmen together probably, and he will deliver to them his faiewell address. It is unfortunate that “The Press” should be so unappreciative as to present opposition to the parade. The Home Guard is taking an hour or two away from its training vitually to farewell its chief. “The Press” appears to be determined to see that the kicks the Home Guard organisers received in the early days of their work will be rounded off with one last parting boot—Yours, etc., ONLOOKER. December 2, 1942.
