LYTTELTON DOCK
ENLARGEMENT NOT THOUGHT FEASIBLE
a. suggestion that consideration pii. should be given to enlarging the dry I dock at Lyttelton was made by Mr F. !f , w. Freeman at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. The i;,V' board’s engineer (Mr P. W. Fryer) explained briefly the difficulties, and the ~i • discussion lapsed. jXI Mr Freeman said he had been mry formed that there was a shortage of ■{;.!» docking facilities in Australian and New Zealand waters, particularly in the % South Island. He asked if it were not possible to enlarge the Lyttelton dock, Hi. which had been built 60 years ago in ;1' the days of sailing ships. Mr Fryer said the project had fret;,i •_ quently been investigated and others {■i 1 -- besides himself had made reports. With the present lay-out of the harbour it |Sj] would hardly be possible to enlarge the I{P dock or to find a site for a new and [ftj; larger one. If the harbour were ex- «; tended a new site might be provided. ||ll The proposal had been rejected before Ifi 1 j on engineering grounds, though it was I| j recognised that a new dock would not ||g be a payable proposition.
