THE BAD QUARTOS

Stolne and Surreptitious Copies. A Comparative Study of Shakespeare's Bad Quartos. By Alfred Hart. Melbourne University Press, in association with Oxford University Tress. 478 pp. (12s 6d.) This is essentially a work for scholars and students: but other readers will di.-covcr that they are neither baffled nor bored. Mr Hart has resourcefully and reasonably tackled afresh the old problems of the six "bad quartos, 1 ' in Pollard's definition. His theory is that each is "a garbled abridgment of an acting version made officially by the play adapter of the company i'rom Shakespeare's manuscript." It is sustained by arguments of various approach, in which every step is secured by logical use of all the relevant evidence. In Ihe process, familiar theories are demolished: for instance, the "revision" theory, in its different forms, and the shorthand reporter theory. Mr Hart is completely convincing.
