ARMED SERVICES APPEALS
DECISIONS OF NO. 1 BOARD A number of rppeals on the Grounds of conscience were heard before the Mo, 1 Armed Services Appeal Board yesterday. Mr E. A. Lee presided and with him were Mr G. M. Hall and Mr J. L. Jones. Alfred Anscll Wilton, managing director of J H. Wilton, Ltd., said he was a Seventh Day Adventist and prepared to do non-combatant service. Decision was reserved. , . . Svdnev Albert Cole, employed as a labourer by the Christchurch Drainage Board, made an appeal on the grounds of conscience. The appeal was allowed, but one on the same grounds by Edward Trevor Suckling, a salesman, was dismissed, reservist expressing his willingness to serve as a non-combatant. • David Gordon Mawson said he had been employed as a sawmill hand, but had resigned his position. He had read in the newspaper that a biscuit factory had now decided to make biscuits only for the Armed Forces, and, as the factory in which lie was employed was solely engaged on providing wood for boxes in which to pack the biscuits, he considered that by doing such work he was contributing to the prosecution of the war. The appeal was allowed. Ebenezer Raymond Jackson, rotary-hoe operator, 'a Seventh Day Adventist, who was willing to do non-combatant service, had his appeal adjourned sine die on the ground of the public interest. The appeal of Walter Gordon Norrell. a salesman, and a member of the Exclusive Brethren was dismissed, reservist’s service to be limited to non-combatant service. Arthur Nancarrow Geo, a stonemason, did not base his appeal on religious grounds, but in the event of an invasion he thought lie could parley with the invader. If Hie invader did not understand English lie could make signs. He objected to serving in the ambulance because he could not stand the sight ol blood, and objected to pain being suffered by anyone. In his trade ho had worked on buildings for defence. Decision was reserved. Other decisions were given as follows; Douglas John Lack, storeman (Coull. Somerville and Wilkie, Ltd.), release from service recommended, appeal to be reviewed in Mai civ, Thomas Charles Gough and Lewis Francis Gough, farm hands (T. Gough), dismissed, each reservist to do three months; Joint Adams Claris, seaman. dismissed; Harold Cauchy Silvester, fanner (Miss I, McDonald), against Home Guard service, dismissed. Decisions of Board No. 2 Furl iter appeals against service- in the Armed Forces were heard before the No, 2 Appeal Board yesterday, Mr J. S. Barnett presided and with him wore Mr S. L. Wright and Mr 11. 11. McCaw. Decisions were given as follows: A. A. Hansen, soldier (Mrs C. Hansen), reserved for further inquiries: T. Jenkins), dismissed; Ernest D. Gyde. foreman joiner (G. A. Gyde). adjourned sine die; R. N Taylor, plumber (J. S. Hawker), adjourned sine die; Arthur J. Jones, farm worker (Mrs E. E. Jones), adjourned sine die, reservist to train during Juno. July, and August; E, L. Osborne, sawniiller (Dirccloi of National Service), adjourned sine die; Ronald Thomas, farmer (Director of National Service), adjourned sine die: F. An appeal bv Leicester C. Frost, dairyman, against Home Guard training, held over from a previous sifting of the board was dismissed. ’
Fire In Shed.—Fairly extensive damage to a sited and some limber at 75 St. Marlins road, was caused by a fire yesterday afternoon. The property was owned by Mr Ewart Smith. The Central Fire Brigade was called at 2.25 part, and confined the outbreak to the shed and some nearby trees.
