Close Finishes The unhoppled trotters produced exciting finishes at Forbury Park on Saturday, the Southlander Danny Malone suffering a half-head defeat in each race through losing ground by several breaks. In ‘he Artillery Handicap. Cleevo Hill, Danny Malone, and El Pcta were on terms turning for home. After breaking caily in the Dominion Handicap Danny Malone settled down, but Tall Timber quickly drew out to 10 lengths clear and would have been hard lo catch had lie not broken after going nine furlongs. El Pern was again with Danny Malone at the home turn, when Cockney put in his claim and just caught Danny Malone on the post. Shadow Maid’s Win In the King George Handicap Shadow Maid led practically all the way, but entering the last lap Mongolian just headed her and Countless and Gienariff were next. Mongolian retired in the next furlong and Shadow Maid was left in Charge to beat Countless home by a short length. Foremost Junior put in a sensational run over the final three furlongs and went from almost last to finish close up fourth. Gienariff stopped badly over tlio final stages and was one of the last to finish. Paced by Special Edition throughout the Churchill Handicap, Countless made amends for his earlier defeat by securing the judge’s verdict by naif a head victory. It was a close finish ■md only the judge could toll the winner. The race was robbed of interest shortly after the start, when Jesse Owens broke and ran across Mongolian and Haughty, causing the latter to lose about 60 yards. An Improver After making a good beginning, Watcher, one of the only two favourites lo win during the afternoon at Forbmv Park, was driven a very confident race to win the Army, Handicap from Larissa and Cheval d'Or. Lucky Gem attempted to win the Hurricane Handicap all the way. but an outsider in Absolutely joined him at the home turn and won by a short length from Fancy Goods, who got a lucky run next the rails in the straight. The winner is trained at Balclutha and returned a dividend of more than a quarter of a century.
