MONDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS Martin Joseph Darby, aged 39, pleaded guilt to a charge of drunkenness, a second statutory offence, and was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. CAST OFFENSIVE MATTER Reginald Hancox, charged with casting offensive matter in a public place, was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. CHIMNEY FIRE Harriott Louisa Hern was ordered to pay costs on a charge of allowing a chimney to catch fire. REMANDED Leslie John Morrison, a seaman, aged 46, was remanded to appear on December 7 on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of H. W. J. Goodwin, at 15 Lincoln road, and committing theft. Ronald William Smart, aged 19, and Desmond Farrell, aged 19, soldiers, were remanded to appear on December 7 on a charge of the theft of articles valued at £ll ss. the property of Albert Joseph Chicken. Arnold Alexander Turnbull, a pastrycook, aged 21, and Neville John Davidson Millar, a labourer, aged 21, were remanded to appear December 3 on a charge of having converted a motor-cycle valued at £lO, the property of Edgar Fairbrass. CHARGE DISMISSED "It would appear that the orderly room is the place where you should have appeared on this particular offence, not a police court, ’’ said the Magistrate In dismissing a charge against a soldier, aged 20, whose name was ordered not to be published, of converting a motor-cycle, valued at £75, the property of the Army Department, Senior-Detective H. Nuttall said that the accused had taken a machine out to learn to ride, had hurt a knee, and spent some time in hospital, the machine not being missed till later. Mr F. D. Sargent, for the soldier, said that his military record had been excellent, but he had foolishly, when he met with the accident, not returned the machine to the camp. THEFT OF RING Charged with stealing a diamond ring valued at £4O, the property of Elma McGrath, Robert Harold Joseph Wheeler, farm manager, aged 30, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years, and was ordered to make restitution of the amount not .recovered, £2O. Senior-Detective Nuttall said that Wheeler had gone to the complainant’s flat to see her. She had been out and he had taken the ring and later sold it. He had been before the Court previously, the last occasion being on a false pretences charge in 1938. His military record was good, and he had been discharged because of a chest complaint. Mr J. K. Moloney said that Wheeler’s last offence (in 1938) had been before he had gone overseas. He had been in rather, bad health, hard up, and in need of money to pay social security charges. ASSAULT A man whose name was ordered not to be published, was convicted and ordered to pay expenses on a charge of having assaulted Harold Nicholas Ellis in Lincoln road on November 28. Ellis said that the accused, a stranger to him, had jumped out from a fence, grabbed him, and had then let go, laughed, danced about in an excited manner, and hit him with his open hand. Mr J. K. Moloney said that the accused was a diabetic subject and had suffered from an overdose of insulin. (Before Mr W. C. Harley, S.M.) MAINTENANCE CASES For default in maintenance payments, Albert Frederick Croton was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended If 2s 6d a week is paid off arrears (£ls Is in respect of his children) in addition to current maintenance. James Uglow Dean, for similar default in respect of his wife, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended while 5s a week is paid off arrears (£3B 15s), in addition to current maintenance. Edwin James Warren was ordered to pay maintenance for his wife of £1 a month.
