CITY COUNCIL APPEALS
OFFICERS CALLED IN BALLOTS
The need for the Christchurch City Council to appeal for the postponement of military service of senior officers was explained by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), after a meeting of the council last evening. The council gave approval to appeals for the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) and the assistant City Engineer (Mr A. H. Jecks), and the Mayor said afterwards that the council would have to appeal for the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) and the Assistant Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie), also in the higher age group ballots, if they were called up for service.
Mr Andrews said that the City Council was carrying on with a scratch staff, mostly of inexperienced young people or older ones who had not had experience in the work of the council. In these circumstances it was necessary to appeal for key men, including senior officers.
Adopting committee reports, the council gave approval to the following appeals, some already made for men called in the last ballot and some to be made after the next call-up:— Works and water department; Messrs Somers, Jecks, G. James (waterworks foreman), C. Walles (ganger), S. Frater (pipe-layer), C. Cherry (turncock), H. Briggs (truck-driver and pipelayer), A. Wood (quarry foreman), J. Tyndall (St, Albans foreman), L. Nankivell (Linwood foreman), and F. Reid (turncock). An appeal was lodged for Mr W. Bray, the only grader-driver that the council had, but since then another man had been found and the appeal for Mr Bray was withdrawn. The works committee reported that only two applications had been received for positions held by Messrs H. C. C. Jones and F. L, Kinvig, of the drawing office, whose service had been postponed for two months, The committee indicated its opinion that the applicants wore not suitable for the positions and said the Appeal Board would be notified. Reserves Department.—Messrs C. Hayden (in charge of the municipal piggeries). L. Moore (truck-driver), and Scott (employed on the sawbench at Bottle Lake). Traffic Deparcment.—Messrs E. Steer (acting supervisor of the vehicle testing station), and G. L. Kay and R. W. Wilson (traffic inspectors). No appeal was made for Mr C. Purves. who was the only experienced member of the testing station steff other than Mr Steer.
