RACING AND TROTTING
ROYAL LANCER’S CUP LORD NUFFIELD AND RINK WIN CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB’S MEETING The largest attendance seen at Ricearton by the present generation of racegoers enjoyed an excellent afternoon's racing on Saturday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club opened its New Zealand Cup meeting. The programme was commenced in fine, warm weather, but during the progress of the second race and until after the third race was decided there was a heavy thunder shower which fortunately cleared before the Cup contest. The fall did not affect the track greatly, as was shown by the times, but no doubt it made appreciable difference to the totalisator business on the second and third races. The remainder of the programme was carried out in pleasant weather, and the slight inconvenience caused by the sudden change was soon overlooked. Speculation was very brisk, and it was fortunate for all concerned that the outside totalizator was in use. The sum of £IOO,6GG (win £41.412, place £59,254) was handled, against £73,366 on Cup day (also' a Saturday) last year. The New Zealand Qup provided a very spectacular race, and a feature of the result was that the three first places were filled by horses of the highly-weighted division. The closing stages, however, were not as interesting as in previous years, as Royal Lancer drew away in the last furlong and won decisively; but there was an exciting tussle for the minor places, heads separating the three horses involved. As expected, Don’t Forget soon pulled himself to the front, and at one stage had a lead of more than four lerigths. ffe was Joined by Eulogist during the middle stages, and the pair still led entering the straight, but both then compounded. It was at this poipt that Rakanui, Yogi, Battledress, Classfown. and Royal Lancer showed prominently, and half-way home Rakanui showed out, but Royal Lancer then put in his claim and reaching the front commencing the final furlong, soon placed the issue beyond doubt. Rakanui appeared likely to secure second money until Gladynev came on the scene with a characteristic finishing run. and beat hlnj for the honours on tire post. The Joker came from well bock to get up for fourth money, only a head away, and the manner in which he completed his task suggested he would have been closer with a little further to go. Classform was close up to The Joker and was followed by Kinsman and Battleuress together, with a gap to Katesbridge, The Raker, Yogi, .a nd Eulogist, with Blue Border in last place.
Load Nuffield has always been recognised as the best'weight-carrying sprinter produced in the South Island in recent years, but with 9-6 on his back, and a lack of racing this it was not sujpuising that he was not seriously coasidftred in the Stewards' Handicap, especially against such a high-class field of sprinters. Fur Coat and 'Scottish Dale were the most prominent turning on to the course proper, with John Gay and Lord Nuffield close to them, and Paliya and Dinah Dhu at the head of the remainder. Palqfa headed the leaders inside the final furlong, and appeared to be the likely winner, but Lord Nuffield, settling down to a very difficult task, gradually wore her down and beat her fairly comfortably. Dinah Dhu caused the second surprise of the race by finishing on into third place, and paying good deuble figures. John Gay weakened nearing the post after being in the picture throughout. Scottish Dale had every chance, as she drew No. 1 and had a clear nun on the fence for the whole journey, but she was done with a good way from the post. The disappointment of the race, of course, was Bashful Lady, who was never near the front, and finished in eighth place. The Champ also failed badly. Straight Bat missed the jump-out, and was In a hopeless position from the outset. Monetary was squeezed for room after about two furlongs had been covered, and skidding on the slippery surface, dislodged his rider, C. Wilson, who, however, escaped with a shaking, agd was able to ride Tutere in the concluding event.
Boulder Dam, Nizam, and Representative disputed favouritism in the New Zealand Derby, and they carried half of the■ pool totalling close on £ 14,000, be'tkv&en them. All ran fair races, but none had a chance with the Ringmaster gelding Rink, who followed Lord Advocate into the straight, and when the latter reared early In the run home, ha drew to the front, and had the race in hand a good way from the post. Botany and Boulder Dam bad a hard struggle for second money, Botany staying on the better, while Representative, who was badly placed for most of the journey, did u*ell to be less than a length away in fourth place. Nizam, who kept Refqr the greater part of the race, followed Representative home, and then came Lenasdo, King Herod, and Foxhaven. Rink was bred by his owner, Mr G. M. Currie, who usually keeps nack a lew year-
1 lings from the Trentham sales, and races them himself. Rink's dam, Impetuous, is by Llmond from Pennon by Coriander from Eulogy, and previously produced Elanage, a good winner, and Master Hotspur, who was a very speedy two-year-old. , , ~ In spite of the big fields and the large turnover, the programme was concluded only a few minutes behind schedule. TURF GOSSIP Canterbury Jockey Club Acceptances for the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting will close Si 5 p.m. to-morrow. —6 Answer to Correspondent M.M.D.L,, Westport.—Spirit and Whero. Record Investments The tolallsator turnover at Riccarton on Saturday was the highest ever recorded on New Zealand Cup Day, the previous best being £97,000 in 192*. The pool on the New Zealand Cup, £17,255 10s, was also the highest on record for the race, Saturday's total of £100,666 was made up as follows: —Middleton Handicap, £8236; Nursery Handicap, £7729: Apprentices' • Handicap, £8645; Cup, £17.255; Welcome Stakes, £11,739: Derby, £13,962; Stewards’ Handicap, £16,094 10s; Riccarton Handicap, £17,024. A Runaway Win Tutere was withdrawn from the Apprentices' Hack Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday and produced in the concluding event, the Riccarton Handicap. He was sent out first choice, though he had won only a maiden race and a hack race, and it was a big rise from this class to such strong open company represented by Saturday’s field. Tutere, however, never left the issue in doubt, and he clearly outclassed his more seasoned opponents by going to the front early and not onlv leading throughout, but winning by the widest margin associated with this race tor many years. This was Tutere s third win in three starts, and there is no doubt about his ability to sprint and to stay. His win on Saturday has meant a quick and substantial rise in the weights, and has put him out of hack class, but he will be eligible to start in his hack engagement next Saturday. An Indian Owner Banco, winner of the Apprentices’ Handicap, is, like Tutere, by Mr Standfast, and this pair appear to do well for the Buchan horse. There is an interesting story attached to Banco. He was purchased as a yearling at the 1941 sales by Mr D. W. Gould for 200 guineas for a Dunedin owner, who, however, later in the day stated that he did not fancy the colt, and did not wish to complete the pulchase. The sale was then transferred to ‘ Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, who had a commission to buy yearlings for the well-known Bombay owner, Mr F. H. Mehta, who had done well with New Zealand horses in recent years. Because of war conditions, It was not possible to ship the colt to Bombay, and ho was left with Mr C; E. Robertson to arrange for his training on behalf of Ills Indian owner. Banco was first trained by C. Boyle at Awapunl, and when Boyle had to enter hospital he was transferred to W. Bryce, who has charge of the firm s stables at Trentham. As a two-year-old Banco had six starts for two seconds and a fourth, and this term he has had four starts for two wins and a third placing. Banco's dam, Fiery Gold, Is by Glomond (bv Blsogne) from Heat by Wolawa from Drought, who is from Nightmare, ancestress of many good horses Including Talking, Noctulform, and Wakeful. Drew Away In Saturday’s race, Damask, in the same ownership as Rink, tried to lead throughout, but after being first mto the straight, Banco drew up to the Spiral filly and the pair left the field to fight out a long tussle, Banco proving the better stayer and winning fairly decisively. The favourite, Stourbridge, was slow away, and his third placing, although well away from the pair in front, was full of merit. Damask's dam, Curtain, is by Thespian from Cowl, and her earlier progeny included Gladswood, Pelmet, and Smoke Screen. High-weight Conditions Slglow was responsible for an attractive effort in the Middleton Handicap on Saturday, as carrying top-weight 10-12 he ran past the leaders in the straight and went on for a very easy win from the Hawera-trained Bunsby, with Sir Gundi, who lost a good deal of ground at the start, finishing solidly into third place to beat Milton Abbas on the post. Because of the scarcity of qualified hurdle or steeplechase riders, several fiat riders had to be requisitioned with a 71b penalty. One of these mounts, Enthrall, went to the front early, and with Nightglass as a companion, led intp the straight only to weaken soon and finish well back. Enthrall Is engaged In the Oaks Stakes, but this race did not appeal as an Oaks trial. The favourite, Stairway, was never In the picture, but the third choice, Last Effort, was always handy to the leaders and petered out only In the run home.

Nursery Candidates First In. winner of the Spring Nursery Handicap, was purchased on behalf of her present Dunedin owner, Mr S. Taylor, as a yearling for 300 guineas. She was bred by Mr E. E. Steele at Oamaru, and her dam, Gobble by Tea Tray, Is one of the Eulogy family. Mr Taylor was represented In the Welcome Stakes by Hurry Home, by Foxbrldge from Merry Wav, who cost 210 guineas at Trentham. and Is In O. Rldgway’s stable, Burberry, favourite for the Nursery Handicap, ap-
peared likely when he entered the course proper in front, but failed to see the ordeal through, and was two lengths away from the third horse. Slipstream was well supported In this race, but when the barrier lifted she whipped round and look no part in the race. First In was followed homo by two Hastings fillies in Marram and Barrosa.
