SMALL SEEDS INDUSTRY
SOUTH CANTERBURY FARMERS CONCERNED Since the announcement of. the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) indicating that the British Government had decided to restrict the' importation of certain classes of small seeds, concern has been felt by South Canterbury farmers because of the uncertain position of the small seeds industry. Sneaking to a representative of "The Press” yesterday, Mr A. 8.. Struthers (secretary of the South Canterbury Primary Production Council) said he felt, in view of the -plantings that had been carried out in South Canterbury, that the Minister should issue a more explicit statement relating to certified grasses and clovers. “I understand," added Mr Struthers. “that there is a market within New Zealand for a considerable portion of crops of certified seed, as against the uncertified product.” Farmers generally expressed the view that the position is somewhat perplexing, in view of the response made to radio appeals that from time to tunc have been addressed to farmers to go in for increased production. The dc cision, if adhered to, will inflict hardship on the small farmer v ho has embarked on the production of small seeds as his main crop.
