APPROVAL AT TIMARU 'Replying to the suggestion that the formation of a council of sport was the first step towards Governmental regimentation, Mr W. A. Jenkins (president of the Otago,Provincial Council of Sport), addressing a representative gathering of delegates of sports bodies In Timaru, said that the councils were really barriers to the State coming into the management of sport. Nor was there any intention to interfere with the internal workings of any affiliated association. The councils of sport were really advisory. The idea behind the proposal was that sporting bodies should combine to safeguard their mutual interests, and if occasion arose to be in a position to speak with a united voice. The chairman (Mr P. B. Foote) suggested that if councils of sport did nothing else but bridge the big gap between the schools and organised games and pastimes, their existence would be worth while. • General approval was given of the proposed council of sport, and another meeting will be held early in the New Year, when representatives of all sports bodies will be in a position to present the considered views of their own organisations;
