CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS IN INDUSTRY
MINISTERS’ STATEMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 27, The Minister of Supply (the Hon, D. G. Sullivan) and the Minister of Labour (the Hon, P. C. Webb) made i joint statement td-night, correcting a misunderstanding which had arisen regarding Christmas holidays following a previous announcement that the customary holidays should be observed. They said that what the Government proposed was that statutory or annual holidays customarily given at Christmas would not be interfered with unless a change in the war situation made work necessary at that time. If an employer in an essential undertaking closed his establishment for any period at Christmas and New Year, all workers would have to be paid the appropriate rates for all paid holidays to which they were entitled under the terms of their employment, and if there were ordinary working days in the period of close-down, workers were entitled to the minimum wage under the Minimum Weekly Wage Order. Where an employer opened his premises on such working days workers would not be entitled to payment unless they reported for work if required to do so.
