BUTTER FACTORY CREAM

♦ REPRESENTATIONS BY DRIVERS’ UNION Representations to cream suppliers to dairy factories in Canterbury to erect stands for the cans outside their gates has been made, through the factories, by the Canterbury Drivers’ Union. The collection of cans was discussed at the last meeting of the union and the secretary (Mr E. Parlane) has sent a letter to all companies: “For years past, some of these drivers have been laid up periodically with strained backs and at present, under war conditions, the position must be very acute, as most of the really physically fit men have been drafted into the Army and the work has to be done by men most of whom suffer from some disability. “The outlook for the future does not look much brighter, as a great many men who have returned from the war will be suffering from wounds or hardships that they have gone through. The union is firmly of the opinion that some compulsion should be put on suppliers to erect stands and the cans of cream to be placed thereon.” The view was expressed in the letter by Mr Parlane that dairy companies would agree on this subject with the union and would exercise all thw’r powers to bring about these reforms, which would minimise the wastage of manpower caused through sickness, and also expedite the work of collection.
