PENALTIES OF £5 FOR AWARD BREACHES
* Penalties amounting to £5 were imposed on the Vacuum Blue Ladder Cleaning Company, Ltd., in the Arbitration Court yesterday for breaches of the Cleaners’, Caretakers', Lift Attendants’, and Watchmen’s Award. The breaches, for which the inspector of awards (Mr E. F. Smith) sought penalties of £2O and £lO respectively, were failure to pay J. Bruton and other employees correct overtime, and failure to keep a correct record in the wages and time book. For the company, Mr D. ,W. Russell said that the allegations were substantially admitted, but the penalties and the period named in the allegations (July 1, 1941, to May 11, 1942) were at issue. He submitted that the breaches were not serious. . In imposing penalties of £2 on the first charge, and £3 on the second, Mr Justice Tyndall said that the Court considered the second to be the more serious offence ■ against the provisions of the award.
