SPORTING

♦ TURF GOSSIP Answer to Correspondent “Sport,” Kimberley.—Sentence regarding Tranquil Star should have read: "the highest weight carried to victory by a mare In the Melbourne Cup was 8-2.” There have been many Instances of big weights being carried by winners of the opposite sex. Including Carbine 10-5, Poltrel 10-0, Phar Lap 9-12, and Peter Pan 9-10. Wakeful carried 10-0 into second place in 1903 and this was the highest weight ever allotted a mare In the racfe. XooK No Part Retainer, trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke for the Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C. Webb, was fairly well supported in a hack race at Invercargill on Saturday, but broke away when lining up at the barrier, and as she was very distressed when pulled up the stewards permitted her withdrawal from the race. Return to Winning List Clinch, winner of the Waikato Cup last Saturday, v»s ridden by H. Wiggins, who also won the' Juvenile race on Sitara. These were the first successes of Wiggins since he broke a leg at Trentham more than 12 months ago. Sitara is a filly by Bulandshar from Stretto. Prospects at Rlccarton Madame Rachael, who is engaged In the Middleton Handicap at Rlccarton on Saturday. II a four-year-old filly by Croupier, and is owned and trained by W. Bryce at Trentham. She won the Champion Hack Handicap at Levin from end to end and gave nothing else a chance. Death of Official The very well-known . racing identity, Mr John Cameron, died at Palmerston North recently. He had a long association with the turf—as a steeplechase rider In his younger days and later as Judge to several racing clubs. Fancied Cup Candidate Royal Lancer looked fit and well when sent out for the Southland Cup, writes "Sentinel.” He drew No. 7 at the barrier and ran wide on the outside of the field when racing round the turn out of the straight. He quickly made up ground and reached second place behind Boloyna at the seven furlong post. Boloyna led him on to the hpme turn, and, although Royal Lancer closed up, the Paper Money gelding won well by a short length. The Raker was a good third, and Sing Sing, after losing ground at the far turn, came on to finish fourth. Royal Lancer looked quite ready to show his best form, and pulled up well after the race. He will haw 161b less on his back in the New Zealand Cup and Is not likely to lose favour by his defeat. He appears to be the best of the New Zealand Cup candidates seen out at the meetingA Harder Task Boloyna had raced poorly in three starts this season, and, although he was improving in condition he was sore last week and was regarded as a doubtful starter at Invercargill. With the going to his liking, however, he showed his best form. Boloyna does not Incur a rehandicap tor the New Zealand Cup, but has little to recommend him for a two mile race and is unlikely to beat Royal Lancer again, Enrlch’s Success In the Levin Handicap last Saturday, Enrich, always within striking distance, ran down the leaders, Sir Crusoe, Blue Border, and Vivid Night, in the straight and won convincingly. There was a great finish for the minor placbs. Sir Crusoe just hanging on against Noble Fox and Gladynev. The two last-named put up good performances, coming from well back, while Noble Fox also ran over a lot of ground. Gladynev was finishing very strongly and would have been in the money In another stride. Kinsman, Mouton Bond, Vivid Night, Hasten, and Don Quex all finished well up. The favourite, Dominate, was handy early, but gradually faded out and finished well back. Unlikely Contingency A North Island correspondent states his opinion that Piastre Is still a New Zealand Cup prospect provided he gets a soft track. ' Melbourne Cup Winner The value of Carbine blood was again shown by the result of last Saturday’s Melbourne Cup. The winner, Colonus, has a double cross of Carbine through Spearmint and Pistol. His dam. Genoa. Is by Baralong from Ednaver by Pistol from Alyerra, by Comedy King, so It is not surprising that she produced a horse capable of getting two miles. Phoclan, runnesrUp to Colonus, Is a grandson of the New Zealand-bred -mare Los Gatos, who was by Absurd from Los Vegas by Bonlform.
