DEHYDRATION OF MEAT
POSITION IN COMING SEASON BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S CONDITIONS An indication that "quite a lot” of meat might have to be dehydrated in the coming season was given by the North Canterbury representative on the electoral committee of the Meat Producers’ Board (Mr Gilbert Grigg) when he reviewed the position of the meat pool at a meeting yesterday of the North Canterbury district executive of the Farmers’ Union. Mr Grigg also spoke of the work of the Meat Producers’ Board during the year, Mr Grigg said that last year the British Government had asked for the dehydration of meat. The conditions were that the British Government should pay a price that was equal to that for frozen meat carcases f.o.b. so that actually there would be - no loss on dehydrated meat, and also that the British Government should pay a certain percentage of the cost of the dehydrating works, and the meat pool pay for the rest, the pool to own the works. "The British Government stipulated that as long as we could ship frozen meat it did not want dehydrated meat,” said Mr Grigg. “The position is that we may have to dehydrate quite a lot.” After dealing with the finances of the meat pool, Mr Grigg said that what would go into the pool in the coming season would all depend on how much frozen meat was shipped and how much was canned. The executive decided that the chairman of the Meat Producers’ Board (Mr T. A. Duncan) and the general manager (Mr J. Fraser) should be asked to meet members of the union on a date to be arranged. .. .
