PLASTIC SURGERY
NEW UNIT AT BURWOOD Details of the proposed plastic surgical unit to be established at Burwood Hospital have been discussed by the Health Department and the hospital committee of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, to which the committee reported yesterday that it was hoped finality would be reached in the very near future. Agreement had been made, the report said, by the Director-General of Health that it was reasonable that the initial cost of alterations and additions should be borne by the War Expenses Account and that when the block was required for civilian patients only the cost should be reimbursed by the board at a valuation. Authority has been given meanwhile to Major J. J. Brownlee to operate on a small number of soldier patients in the Christchurch Hospital and he has already begun this work. Approval of the plan of the plastic surgical unit had been sought of the Director-General, the finance committee reported. The estimated cost was approximately £4500. In answer to a question, the chairman (Mr L. B. Evans) said he was not sure that the War Expenses Account would provide the whole cost.
