BREAD ZONING AT BRIGHTON

OBJECTIONS TO NEW SCHEME DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON MAYOR “This meeting has been called by the business people of New Brighton to protest against a the, allocation of bread toyshops, particularly in reference to the treatment of the local baker (Mr L. .JL Besley),”.said* Mr Smith (chairman) at a meeting heKP IrfMiss Leaver’s rooms, North Beach. Mr Smith added that he was attending in a neutral capacity as chairman. Mr G. W. Burrowes, a member of the zoning committee, gave a detailed statement about the starting of the bread zoning scheme in Christchurch, and stated that the zoning was purely a war measure with the object of saving petrol. Mr Burrowes answered a number of questions, but said that he had not seen the proposed allocations for New Brighton shops in the new scheme to come into operation on Monday. “We have been told through the press recently that the new scheme would be one baker one shop," said Mr. R. D. Martin. “We have five shops selling bread at North Beach, and they are all to be supplied by one firm'of bakers only. The new scheme is,*for the purpose of saving tyres and petrol, yet a firm of city bakers is to travel 10 miles with each car to deliver bread, and the New Brighton baker (Mr Besley), who has only .one mile to travel, is to have his North Beach supply cut out. I understand also that under the new system Mr Besley will have his output reduced by several hundred large loaves a week, and yet he is not allowed to retain customers in North Beach who have been dealing with him for years.”' . _ . “When the zoning first came in, Mr Besley was appointed to supply my shops,” stated Mr R. Flower (New Brighton). “This was altered and. a city firm was appointed. This week the firm has advised that it will not be supplying me after Saturday. lam not on Mr Besley’s list, so it soems that I am to be cut out as a seller, said Mr Flower. He added that at present there were nine shops selling bread in New Brighton, and only two would be selling bread after this week. I am not so much concerned about the loss of the bread sales, but I, strongly object to the system of cutting me out and allowing a' competitor grocer, a few doors away, the monopoly of bread sales,” said Mr Flower. “This must mean loss to others like myself. Five other shops in New Brighton are in the same position. If the bread sales in New Brighton are to be restricted to only two shops, then let them be other than grocer’s shops, B ross ir.“{}‘ fair to give one grocer in New Brighton the sole right of selling bread. All shopkeepers present said that, though the scheme is to come into operation on Monday, _ they have had no official information about the change, and have had no opportunity of stating their objections. It was decided to request the zoning committee to postpone the date of commencing the new scheme until further representations could be made, with the object of arranging a more equitable adjustment T Messrs E. L. Smith W. B. Short. L. W King, R. Flower, A. T. Dalton, C. T. Nolan M Cook, and Mrs W Leverett were appointed a committee to wait on the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), the Transport Department, and the Bread Zoning Committee to discuss the proposed new zoning scheme Jor Ncw Brighton, and to protest against the allocation of only one firm of bakers to supply North Beach district.
