THE ALLIES
NEW NOVEL
Nobody’s Darlings, By Margaret lies. Gollancz, 233 pp. (9/6 net.) This comedy is played against a background of painful reality. Miss lies depicts with satirical truth some of the stupid, cruel, and pitiful things that were done when London schools V«e evacuated to the country and the pupils billeted on the voluntary plan. But she does not warp her pen by insisting on blunders and abuses. Indeed, she makes it grow out of them by throwing into alliance the London schoolmaster, who has his staff and his scholars to fight for, and the dail yfarmer Perry, who has his greedy landlord and a greedier previous tenant to fight; and the allies fight with igusto and resource.
