PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
The new council of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, elected at the annual meeting last month, met this week, when Mr A. D. Ford was elected chairman and Mr C. R. Russell deputy-chair-man, An executive committee comprising Messrs L. C. Knight, C. P. Purnell. C. R. Russell, C. W Oliver, and L. J. Williamson was set up. It was decided to approach the Riccarton Borough Council for assistance in the protection of stock and road traffic over the Alliance street railway crossing, where, during the year, a motorist was killed, and a mob of sheep run into by a train. In reply to the council’s inquiry the Traffic Manager of the Railways Department wrote that when dogs were kept at the Christchurch station, after having arrived by rail, proper facilities were available and used for feeding and watering them. The council decided to issue cautions in some cases of reported cruto animals. The council has had in mind for some time th° of branch associations on the r *e*t Coast, as well as at Mr F P. Bridge, a member of the council, was authorised to bring down a report on this matter. %
