ARMED SERVICES APPEALS
DECISIONS OF NO. 2 BOARD
Out of a total of 2886 male teachers in New Zealand, no fewer than 1300 have been withdrawn from the schools for service in the Armed Forces, said Mr L. E. Rowley, secretary to the Canterbury Education Board, in making an appeal for exemption from service of a big number of teachers before the Armed Services No. 2 Appeal Board yesterday. In Canterbury 224 teachers had been taken out of a total of 457, and the position was aggravated by the very few men entering the Training College, since men students in training entered military service on attaining the age of 18 years. Students in training were being used as relieving teachers. This practice must affect the training of these students. Some of the married women teachers who had returned to the profession were finding it impossible to carry on; in any case married women teachers were unable to leave their homes to fill the vacant positions in the country. In some districts the supply of married women teachers willing to return to teaching was already exhausted. In further support of the appeals, Mr S. J. Irwin, Chief Inspector of Schools, said that in England no school teacher over the age of 30 years was allowed to hold any position in the Army. If he took up service he forfeited his superannuation. It was also found that in air raids the first man the children looked for was the teacher who had taught them. Mr J. S. Barnett presided, and with him wer,e Messrs S. L, Wright and G. T. Thurston. Mr E. D. Thompson appeared for the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron represented the military authorities.
