REALISM IN ARMY TRAINING

EXERCISE FOR STUDENTS AT COURSE IN TACTICS

Development of the Army’s policy of introducing realism into its training was seen yesterday when officers and men attending, a South Island school of instruction tactics course took part in a field firing exercise.

With light tanks lumbering alongside them, machine-guns chattering viciously, mortar bombs bursting close at hand, and aircraft roaring a few feet over their heads and hurtling down at them in imitation of dive-bombing, the infantrymen were given a chance to put into practice the theory they had learned during their course. Zipping bullets, smoke screens, barbed wire obstacles, and the bark of the tanks’ guns heightened the impression of real battle.
