DISPLAY OF BUNTING

CRITICISM BY MAYOR OF TIMARU

“I was very disappointed with the response to my appeal,” said the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan), referring to the flying of flags and display of bunting at Timaru on Sunday, in celebration of the Bth Army’s victory in Egypt. “The request to the business firms and the public to fly flags," Continued Mr Hanan, “was not meant solely as a gesture of jubilation, but rather as a tribute to the gallant soldiers of the United Nations. These men have nobly proved that they are sacrificing health, comfort, and even life itself in the fight for the freedom, justice, and honour which the British flag symbolises. Our memory of these men is that they have contributed a very important part of all that we hold near and dear to us in liberty and freedom. Surely it is appropriate that the flying of flags should be carried out on such occasions to keep fresh in our minds the real cost of our cherished privileges? “I have a list of 28 well-known firms who did not respond to the appeal.’’ Mr Hanan added. “With two exceptions, Government departmental offices also neglected to hoist their flags. It is a pity that the Government does not give a lead on such occasions,” said* Mr Hanan.
