STALINGRAD BATTLE The latest reports o£ the new German offensive against Stalingrad say that the main defences are still intact, though under enormous pressure. A cable message to the 8.8.C. says that the offensive started with one of the most tremendous air bombardments of the war. Hour after horn* the Russian front line was pounded. At least 1500 Mights were made over an area a mile wide by a few miles deep. An exceptionally heavy artillery barrage accompanied the bombing. Then 100 enemy tanks rumbled forward over the bunting debris, closely followed by two divisions of infantry. The German losses were very heavy, more than 50 of their tanks being knocked out in one day.— London, October 16.
