APPEAL FOR UNION SECRETARY
NATIONAL WATERFRONT ORGANISATION
An appeal for Tobias Hill, national secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Union, was adjourned sine die by the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. The appeal' was originally lodged by the Waterfront Cpntrol Commission, because, at that time, Hill was working on the waterfront at Lyttelton as an A class man; but Mr J. Flood, Lyttelton, national president of the union, appeared before the board yesterday and explained that Hill had since been elected to his present position. so that the appeal was really by the union. Hill was now living at Wellington. Mr S. L. Wright commented that the union apparently wanted its secretary to last for a long time, since he was only 26 years of age. He seemed a young man to choose for the position, Mr Flood: He was not chosen. He was elected democratically. There were two nominations. The chairman (Mr J. S. Barnett) said Hill’s medical classification was grade 2. The appeal was adjourned sine die with a number'of appeals for waterside workers.
