CIGARETTES STOLEN FROM SHIP
— « WATERSIDER FINED £lO (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 29. The theft of eight packets of cigarettes, valued at 4s, from an American ship was admitted in the Magistrate’s Court by Albert Oliver Dufty, aged 34, a watersider. The police said that a sailor on guard saw Dufty acting suspiciously, and found the cigarettes concealed in his socks. At least 22 cartons of cigarettes had been broached on this ship. Defending counsel said that Dufty had found eight packets on a raft and had succumbed to temptation. He would be excluded from the wharf for a long period. He was married, with three children, and previously had an unblemished reputation. “We all know that cargo brought from overseas comes in peril; therefore the theft of cargo is a grave matter,” said the Magistrate (Mr J. Molding). “It is sad to find a family man like Dufty with a good reputation coming before the Court. Aft£r much hesitation I have decided not to send him to gaol. Apparently the theft was not contemplated.” Dufty was fined £lO.
