MANY APPEALS FOR RAILWAYMEN Most of the time of the Armed Forces Appeal Board (No. 1) yesterday was occupied in hearing appeals lodged by, the Director of National Service on behalf of the Railways Department. Altogether 181 appeals were set down for hearing. Many of the appeals were for men engaged' in the Addington workshops, and those in the locomotive department included fitters, cleaners, traffic staff, porters, traffic labourers, signalmen, and surfacemen. During the hearing of appeals on behalf of men engaged at the Addington workshops. Mr E. A. Lee, chairman of the board, said that it had been brought to the notice of the board that men had refused to work overtime. Mr R. A. Lendrum, workshops Inspecsaid the department could not force men to work on Saturday. This was an agreement made before war was declared. Work on Saturdays was optional, and men would sooner work overtime than on that day. There had been cases where men had refused to work. A number were only doing 40 hours a week, and were engaged on ordinary maintenance, which was different from munition work. To Mr J. E. Jones, who asked Mr Lendrum if he knew that men in Wellington were working up to 71 hours, the answer was that that was probably munitions work. This work represented only 12 per cent, of that done at Addington. Mr G. W. Hall asked what would happen in the case of extreme urgency. Mr Lendrum said the workshops would Just have to close down.
