PURCHASE OF OILS AND FATS
AGREEMENT BY U.S. AND BRITAIN
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Sept. 27 A British and American agreement for the partition of the world into areas in which each country will exclusively buy fats, oils, and oil seeds for the use of all the united nations is announced .by the Combined Food Board. The plan, which is already operating, has been accepted by food authorities in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. The agreement provides that the United States shall make exclusive purchases of fats, oil seeds, and oil in North America and South America, the Caribbean Islands, Portuguese Africa, Spanish Africa, and Liberia, and also of copra in Tahiti and all the Fighting French Pacific islands. The United Kingdom will purchase all animal fats in Argentina and Uruguay, and fats, oil seeds, and oils in the British Empire countries, Fighting French Africa, and Belgian Congo.
Recruiting Campaign for Women.— Tens of thousands of women volunteers are urgently required in Britain for service to release men for the front line. The three women’s services launched a joint recruiting campaign at the week-end, a special appeal being made to married women, including childless wives of men in the services. Whether childless married women will be included in a compulsory call-up depends on the response to the campaign.—London. September 27. Military Parade in Dublin—ln one of the biggest military parades ever held in Dublin, many thousands of troops, representing all units of the Irish Army and all the auxiliary services, paraded in the streets with an air escort overhead. Mr de Valera took the salute, accompanied by Ministers and many members of the Dail—Dublin. September 27. Marine Insurance Reductions.—A cut has been made, in war risk rates on Atlantic voyages for the second time within a month, based on new and improved methods of convoying, and other protective measures, which have greatly reduced the number of sinkings. Insurance rates also have been reduced to New Zealand and Australia via the Panama Canal.—New York, September 27, New Polish War Minister.—Under pressure of work. General Sikorski has decided to relinquish the post of Polish War Minister, which he combined with his other duties. To the separate post of War Minister Lieutenant-General Marjan Kukiel, aged 58, who is a distinguished historian, has been appointed,—London, September 27.
