OPERATIONS IN MADAGASCAR
VICHY CLAIMS OF SUCCESS
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27, According to the Vichy radio, the British forces in Madagascar, after heavy artillery fire, attacked French positions 25 miles from Antananarivo. The French troops, after several hours of resistance, repulsed the British. THE QUEEN ILL ATTACK OF BRONCHITIS (8.0. W.) RUGBY, Sept. 27, The Queen has been confined to bed for the last week suffering from acute bronchitis. She is making good progress. There is no cause for anxiety, but she will be unable to resume normal duties for the next three weeks. AMERICANS DETAINED IN PARIS (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27. The police in Paris rounded up at least 250 Americans, who were handed over to the Germans for internment. Many of them are at present in custody. They are reported to include Mr Charles Bedaux, in whose chateau near Tours the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were married. Japanese General Killed. —A Chinese communique reports that LieutenantGeneral Nuogi Sakai, a leading Japanese commander, was killed in action at Lanchi, in Chekiang Province Chungking. September 27.
