BOOK REVIEW

MacARTHUR General Douglas Mac Arthur. By Francis Trcvellyan Miller. Angus and Robertson. 304 pp. (8/6) Dr. Miller's study of the famous American soldier and Allied commander is sure to be widely rend. It is no hasty sketch, but a thorough piece of work. The Scottish origins of the “fighting Mac Arthurs,” the influence of the General’s father, early campaign experience in the Philippines, in the Russo-Japanese war, and in France, and later experience in army organisation and reorganisation as Chief of Staff in the United States Army; these themes, and others not less relevant, are well developed in a narrative that, of course, leads up to Japan’s assault on Pearl Harbour and the battles of Luzon and the Bataan Peninsula.
