OBITUARY

MRS B. SHIPLEY Mrs Burton Shipley, whose death occurred recently, was one of the earliest settlers in the Greendale district. Born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, in 1849, she arrived in New Zealand by the Himalaya in 1868 and settled in Courtenay, where she was married. In 1878 her husband took up land in the Greendale district, where she lived until her death. During her long life she enjoyed excellent health and witnessed many changes in the district. She is survived by one son, Mr H. B. Shipley, of Greendale, and three daughters—Mrs M. Morland, of Fendalton, Mrs E. P. Maddison, of Waikuku, and Mrs J.- Ballagh, of Hororata. One son, Mr G. The bullock driver was Mr Rawle (later of Rawle’s crossing). There were no bridges at that time, and all rivers had to be forded, the Rakaia being very dangerous when in flood. Mrs Monson saw the flood of 1863. She knew Ashburton when the only buildings there were ar accommodation house and stables, and saw the first train pass through the town. She is survived by Mr J. N. Monson and Mrs H. Woodside (Blenheim), Mr R. H. Monson (Timaru). and Mrs F. G. Greenslade (Anama). There are eight grandchildren, and three , great-grand-children. Two of her younger brothers, Messrs A Nicholas (Allenton) and F. Nicholas (Napier) are still living. . , .• The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. W. Harding, of St. Stephen’s Church. The large attendance testified to the respect in which Mrs Monson was held.
