MEAT PRICES

Sir,—l wish to thank Mr T. W. Stephenson, president of the Master Butchers’ Association, for his explanation, which clearly shows that the Government, thrbugh the Price Tribunal, is trying 'to force on the meat trade a system to which it does not itself conform. That is, the Government is breaking the wholesale price laid down in Ifrice Order-No. 98. This stipulates that porkers into the shop are quoted at Bid per lb wholesale, that being the basic price on which retail prices are based to the public. Taking into consideration the prices paid for porkers at the yards recently, plus killing expenses of 6s a carcase, I still maintain that a large proportion of the porkers has reached Is 2d per lb.— Yours, etc..
